Higashiazai District, Shiga

Higashiazai District (東浅井郡, Higashiazai-gun^?) was a district located in Shiga Prefecture, Japan.

From the reports of 2005 Census, the district had an estimated population of 14,509. The total area was 38.53km².

Timeline

• April 1, 1971 - The village of Biwa gained town status.
• February 13, 2006 - The towns of Azai and Biwa merged with the old city of Nagahama to create the new city of Nagahama.
• January 1, 2010 - The towns of Kohoku and Torahime merged with the expanded city of Nagahama. Higashiazai District was thereby dissolved.

Mergers

• On February 13, 2006, the towns of Azai and Biwa merged with the city of Nagahama.
• On January 1, 2010; several municipalities were merged into the city of Nagahama. Kohoku and Torahime in Higashiazai District and Kinomoto, Nishiazai, Takatsuki, and Yogo in Ika District and merged into Nagahama. Higashiazai District and Ika District were both dissolved.^[1]
